When the SCN system is down, or back up, or changed in some major way that users will notice, sysadmins should promptly notify Joel Ware and Melissa Guest at
scnmotd@netscape.net - and - Joel's pager

If you tell them what is happening, they will update the MOTD accordingly. The "scnmotd" address has an auto-responder to confirm that it has received the mail. Joel's pager will display up to 256 characters, (prob'ly enough to contain the format below).

Also, please call the "Quick Info Desk" at the Seattle Public Library to let them know of system status. They get many calls asking about SCN when it is down. Again: notify when down; notify when back up.

Suggested outage / degradation message content: who -- what -- when -- why
e.g. "SCN mail machine -- down -- until 10/26 0900 -- disk crash."

The above list is meant to include people who may be of assistance when the SCN system needs work. Some people may help directly, others may offer useful insights. It has been culled from hardware list correspondence over the last year. There are a few other ways to reach the bulk of this group. One is scn@smsys.com and another is hardware@foneybone.com .
